Synopsis
She Trusts Him for the Job, But Can She Trust Him With Her Heart?
Men are optional. That was the credo Emma Chandler's suffragette aunts taught her and why she established Harper's Station, a women's colony that offers a fresh start to females in need. But when a dangerous and shadowy assailant tries repeatedly to drive the women out, Emma is forced to admit they might need a man after all. One who can fight. And there is only one man she trusts enough to ask.
Malachi Shaw has finally earned the respect he's always craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma's telegram arrives, he rushes back to Texas to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she's not a girl any longer. She's a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn't deserve.
As the danger intensifies, Emma, Mal, and the ladies of Harper's Station must choose safety or whether to risk everything to fight for their future.
"Witemeyer's latest is an entertaining read with plenty of drama and action, a smidgen of suspense and two main characters with perfect chemistry...And of course, the romance is tender and sigh-worthy--a key reason why her readers keep coming back for more."--RT Book Reviews
My Opinions
Today we might call a character like Emma Chandler an "independent woman." At the very least, someone you dont want to be at odds with.
I really like the boldness of the women in Harper's Station and the teamwork that helps their little community function. As the story goes along, there are bumps in the road and I love how the women stand up for each other. It reminded me that we all need to rely on others and pay back kindnesses.
When I was researching the publication date and cost of the book, I saw one of the other reviewers say the book reads like one written by Deeanne Gist. So true! I absolutely loved her books and if you have also enjoyed them (including Love on the Line, Maid to Match, Courting Trouble and Deep in the Heart of Trouble) you might want to look into this book as well.
I enjoyed watching the characters struggle to find the meaning of the threat notes and find proper solutions but that said: There was a tad bit of domestic violence in the book. Not encouraged violence but simply I want to share in case that is a trigger for any of my readers. You might find healing in the happily ever after, but likely reading about hurts of other women might evoke emotions unnecessarily. If you are ever being hurt by anyone, remove yourself from the situation and get help as soon as possible!
I would give the book a 4 star review rating and recommend it for anyone interested in a story of new beginnings :)
Ah well, I dont want to keep you from placing that order any longer. You can get your copy from Amazon for $8.25 here.
